More likely you had a faulty adaptor, or that particular card had a problem with its dvi socket.

DVI comes in two flavours, DVI, and DVI-D. The -D version is digital only, while the more common DVI includes the standard analog connections as part of its normal pinout. You just need the plug adaptor to make it work.

Even a ancient 'VGA' 640x480 monitor will work using an adaptor, just as long as you remember to set up the refreshrates, and resolutions properly. And by 'default' they should be set to the lowest level anyway.

Like mentioned, likely the adapter was faulty. But, GFX driver/Windows might not have picked up the switch to the other connector. Even if its 1 card, the connectors make it appear under Windows as 2 cards in order to support 2 monitors, etc.
