Trying to find out why my Compaq laptop shut down on me earlier and now want turn back on.

I've managed to take the whole thing apart and i'm looking at the AMD CPU trying to see if this is the problem....

Could someone have a look at a picture I've taken to see what they think, I don't have photobucket would have to e mail to you (sorry)....

Copy the 'direct link to image' from imageshack.

Then click this button
insertimage.gif
and paste it.

When you upload to imageshack it automaticaly gives you codes for posting in forums, just copy and past into your post, then it will show up as a image or link in the post.

Take the chip out and smell it, also look behind the die, black scorch marks there aren't a good sign. Test in another board if it passes a visual.

Right after cleaning it over alittle seems I'm left with a couple of marks, I can't smell anything. 1 mark is square there is also acouple of odd marks along the chip too.

I don't have another board to check it on at present, what about trying a different cpu I think I have a 2100+ somewhere

Is the Sempron the same as the old Athlon??

The square might just be markings on the die that've rubbed off over time. Is the back of the chip all one colour? Try the other cpu by all means.

Try the other cpu to confirm if its the board or cpu. However, since your 2100+ is a non mobile palomino, it might not be recognised by the BIOS and fail boot (in my experience with some HP and Compaq laptops). Might need another mobile chip to really test.

Might not be worth the effort of purchasing a new CPU as i'm not sure thats the problem, there was a small list of common problems with this model so just trying to check without having to buy loads of bits to check.

It had been fine then just shut off not been able to get it to do anything since, no lights no beeps no nothing

cpu looks fine, the square is normal, its laser etched onto the cpu's when they are made. other marks are likely traces of goup not quight cleaned off.

i suspect the lappy is just dead.
RMA time?

It's probably a dry joint on the mobo somewhere.

I work in a school and countless laptops have died due to this kind of relatively unexplained cause.

The chip looks fine. My old 3000+ Barton had those same markings so it's nothing to worry about.

I'd guess your laptops simply had its day. Could be one of several causes i'd imagine.

If you sell the chip let me know as i could be interested.
