Damaged components

How can you tell if youve damaged your cpu or gpu by pushing them too far? Do they just stop working? Would a gpu start tearing e.t.c?

I havnt damaged anything (atleast i dont think so lol)

I just dont know what to look for when they do start going wrong. I actually posted the thread as id been messing with my GPU per the sticky in the graphics section on the forum and i noticed even when setting my card back to default theres a lot of tearing when playing Skyrim >.<
