Damaged CPU?

Wonder if anyone can shed some light on this for me.
I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (Brisbane) . Just as a week or so its been overheating and shutting down computer for safety reasons of course, so i decided to clean out the case and heatsink to reapply some new thermal paste , was a lot of dust so i figured clean out plus new paste should have sorted it out but nope not one bit. core temp says idle and browsing usage that core temp is 37-early 40's speed fan says about the same.now any kind of load such as gaming and say video converting this temp rises upto the 80's and more then shuts comp down. Now with new paste and clean case/heat sink could it be a damaged CPU or something in BIOS/Windows causing this I.E a wrong setting??? I'm at wits end. I also add that its a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Low Profile CPU Cooler on the CPU. Any other info needed i can pass on. Thanks Jaklas

Is it overclocked? Does any kind of load actually take the CPU load up to 100% or is it only the temps that rocket? Can't think of anything obvious that would be causing this..

How much paste are you putting on? You only need an extremely small amount, though that's common knowledge, so I assume you know that. I assume also you checked the CPU fan still works?

Could be one of those rare cases where a CPU has gone kaput.

I've seen Athlon XPs crack into two pieces through heat damage, though they're a lot older. Still rare though.
