So I took delivery of 2gb (4x512mb) of DDR2-667 memory today for yet another PC I'm building.

Whilst I'm waiting for the other components to arrive from elsewhere I decide to whack those memory sticks in my second PC for testing. So I carefully remove my 1gb (2x512gb) DDR2-533 and put the new ones in.

And lo and behold I get the 'Windows Genuine (Dis)Advantage - this computer has had significant hardware changes and requires reactivation' thingummybob appear. WTF?

So I switch it off and replace the old memory, and switch it back on, only to still have that MS BS appear.

Grrrrrrrrrgh!

I thought that the WPA thingy was pretty forgiving and only has a go after a motherboard or NIC switch. All I did was temporarily upgrade the memory! AAAarrrrrrrrggghhhhh! Better go try activate it again... and if it doesn't work then I'm installing Ubuntu! B*sta*ds!

It's a proper genuine OEM copy, with disk, booklet and COA. Honest! Not some killa warez torrent I downloaded from Captain Jack! Doh!

It takes about a minute to reactivate, either online or through the phone - get over it tbh.

Oh. OK. You were right. 'tis done now with one click of a button.

I thought I might have to go through all that horrendous activation key malarkey over the phone like I had to after a (slight) mobo change.

Phew. I'll not be such a whining blouse in future. Still... WPA is always a pain. Oh for the good old days of installing 98SE and 2000 whenever and wherever the hell I liked without having to get the nod from Uncle Bill.

And that is why we now have PA.
If you hadn't been one of those that illegally installed OS's in the past then PA probably would never have been developed.
It was/is an anti-piracy measure - so you're as much to blame for its existence as anyone.

Oh and as XP and Vista happily run for 30 days without the need to activate you can still happily install it whenever and wherever you like.

And if you're related to Bill Gates then why are you paying for OS's?
Surely he'll give you some free copies?
