Took my car for a MOT today £40 failed on a broken offside coil spring. so having it sorted tomorrow £80 then have to take it back and get retested £25

what a joke, the MOT garage say that they have to do a full retest now.

I just want to rant that's all. Everyone is out to get your money these days. How can you possibly save money when all the damn goverment wants to do is take your money, recently tax'd my car, £180 odd quid, for what ? to drive on pot holed roads, congested roads blah blah.

I mean the garage that did the MOT say that even if i had the item fixed in a few hours I would still have to have a full retest. All they have to do it look and see i have had a new coil spring fitted and done deal. But oh no, £25 please, so my MOT will have cost me £145 great!

Sorry felt the need to rant

car in Q is renault Laguna "W" 16v 1600

Admittedly I've never had a broken spring, but is it possible not to notice beforehand?

I do agree that the changes are bordering on farsceical (sp?), but one hting it's mad me do is check my car that bit more thoroughly beforehand.

mine was broken and picked up at the MOT 2 weeks ago.
I thought there was something a bit iffy on the suspension, but it certainly didnt feel bad at all.

if the spring is broken, usually it still sits in position...but a savage bump or speedhump could cause the spring to twist and the two 1/2's may become unaligned.

mine was 185 all in. needed a new shock as well. MOT, and repairs. not bad for another years motoring.

Why do you need a full retest? I thought if you get the car repaired by the Garage you had the first MOT in they will then pass the MOT once the repairs are done?

if you take the car away from the garage to get it fixed they have to do a full retake, it is the new laws.

but if they do the work then I dont think you get charged for the retake, which doesnt have to be a retake anyways because they did the work.

Kate's Mondeo failed on broken coil springs but to drive it wasn't noticable really.

Mine snapped after being parked up for a few months and the first time I drove the car I gave it full lock and it went CRACK CRACK so I had a fair idea something was up ;)

Fair enough :)

I wonder how long the ones on my daily will last. They're 23 years old and have done 176,000 miles

I hated putting my Spit through an MOT, because I knew it would fail. Ended up failing because of the fog lamp switch, fog lamps needed replacement bulbs also, also needed a new rear cylinder and new brake hoses. Didn't cost too much, but the garage I went to were happy to give me a discount and they also did a retest for free.

They didn't notice that the rear leaves were broken...still, when we replaced it, the leaves came out in 8 pieces!

Front one went on my mondeo and i had to drive it nigh on 60 miles with part of the spring digging into the top of the tyre. pretty silly really but everywhere local wanted a fortune to repair. Seemed to handle fine and the tyre was unmarked which was weird coz there was so much force onto it i couldn't budge spring up with my hands.

There changing it again soonish. To allow upto 2 weeks before the restest. So charging you twice should be got rid of again. (acording to my MoTer)

Common sense really, anything could have happened to the car in the time between the first test and the second one. Accidentally, or on purpose.
