Damn Resonance

I is in need of your help again, good OCuk people. :)

Basically, I have a Coolermaster CM-690II Adv and I absolutely love it.

The problem is, the two spare 5.25 covers in the front make a resonance noise when they are left in. You know the one - up and down, up and down. Driving me mad!

Don't want to take them out since it would ruin the look of the case, but more importantly it would let a lot of dust in.

Is there anything I can do to them that isn't particularly visible on the outside to stop this?

Thanks.

Weird, I have the case an no issues like that...

What about a small amount of blue/white tack somewhere? Or even cable tie them together? I dont really know what to suggest.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did consider blue tack, but I am not sure because it could be a bugger to get out of all the small holes after.

Cable ties might work. Think I might try that.

And I agree it is a little strange because it is such a well build case, but thats just my luck I suppose. :)

Hey.

Nice idea. I had a look and cable ties are not going to be as easy as I first though. Might pick up plastic if my current system fails.

At the moment, I have actually just tried some masking tape between the sides of the 5.25 covers and the front of the case.

What I was hoping was to achieve a tighter fit so it might stay still.

So far so good, but I think more testing is required.

Have you thought of emailing coolermaster themselves and see if there was any sort of production issues with some batches? You might find this is a common issue for them with an easy solution?

Foam is a nice idea, but probably overkill for now. :)

Smeaney, I honestly though that it is not a fault as such, just something that happens. In either case, it is not that big of a deal.

The tape on the 5.25 slots seems to have done the job.

Although I am going to offer a tip to people that suffer from this problem - check those side panels. :)

Basically, the case developed another annoying sound that I thought was the 5.25 slots playing up again. This time however, it turned out that the thumb screws for the side panel weren't done up tightly. Quick turn and my noise disappeared.

So fingers crossed I have a silent case for now. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions though. If it does start making more noise, I will try them.

I think it is more of a case of the foam reducing the tolerance between the 5.25 covers and the front of the pc. So a tighter fit might stop any small movement that could cause noise.

In this respect, almost any material would work. :)

if by 'resonance' you mean sound, perhaps the source of the sound is also the source of the resonance?
like if you changed the rpm of the fan causing the resonance, the resonance would go away

That is a good idea and I did consider it.

Currently have my fan controller set so all my fans do 600rpm.

Tried changing the rpm several times to make sure I hadn't just hit a resonance with another component, but nothing changed.

As for the sounds, yes I mean the sound that is made when a component is vibrating and hitting another.
