if you return it to MS (which is excellent, phone them up, they take your details and send the courier to you) you don't need proof of purchase, the original packaging e.t.c. Infact they ask you specifically not to send it back in an xbox box, and to send it back in a plain box.

I think I'm a bit of an expert now on the MS support, I just sent of (as of today) my 3rd xbox, and am awaiting delivery of my fourth. Even though I got mine at launch and the years warrenty being expired, they were happy to do so. Though i do think the warrent comes from the first console purchase date, and not the console created date on the back of the xbox.

Thats not bad at all, but then again its something I'd expect from a company such as microsoft. In the past I have dealt with Sony, I had a faulty monitor and they replaced it no questions asked, and even a year later when the replacement messed up they replaced it again without any questions, so I can't fault them on that. :)

Technically by buying a 360, you're COSTING them money. Each machine is built at cost ;)

As far as reliability goes, the PS3 will be no different (indeed the same can be said for all bleeding-edge consoles)

Absolutely true.

Give away razors to sell blades, e.g. Gillette.

I'm so trusting of the 360 I have kept the box that they send it back in, just so on my next return I have a custom made box for returns.

I did it last time and it came in handy, I'd bet my house I will need it again. Anyone who thinks this is about industry standard is deluding themselves.

Exactly how many Wii and Ps3 threads on failures have we had?

the bugatti veyron is a classic example of a company building a product then forced to sell at what seems one of the biggest losses incurred ive ever seen, all to prove that it could be done
they cost something like £5,000,000 each to make and they sell them for £840,000+ losing 4 million plus on each car
not much to do with this thread but i thought id throw it out there as an example of what some companies will do even if it costs them money :)
