A slightly pointless thread but I'm looking to vent some steam.

A while back my XPS M170 hit the dirt or so I thought. At the time it looked like the graphics card had overheated and it was displaying some horrid blocks and lines on the screen. Some of you may even remember my thread here with the pictures of how bad it looked.

Well about 13 - 14 months later i though id get rid of it. So i browsed ebay to see how much similar faulty ones were going for and noticed one which had the exact same problem i did. He mentioned in the description that when he disabled the Nvidia drivers, the computer would work fine.

So this gave me an idea. I uninstalled the graphics drivers and installed the newest ones. To my surprise, problem solved ! I cant believe that I didn't try this before and i am absolutely kicking myself.

Hmmmm, don't be so sure. My mate's (my old machine) M170 was on the way out early last year, and he kept it going for a bit with different drivers. It got worse and worse, and in the end when the PC wouldn't even run a SUSE live CD, we knew it was time for a new graphics card.

Don't want to put a downer on things - just be careful :)

I still have a (I assume) faulty FX2500, might give it a clean down and see if it'll work again. Would mean I could sell one off if it worked, they still fetch a fairly nice price. :)

I'll see how it fares, if it does it again then I'll just eBay the damn thing.

Oh well, it gives me something to watch films on in bed again now ! haha.

there is a replacement fx5*** series available on members market for £8 if the m170 has removable gfx. was going to buy it myself to replace a dead 8400m gt in a new sony but the damn thig is pressure welded to the board.

what makes you say that? if they are both pci-e and not welded down to the board then there is no reason why you can't.

edit: sp.
