My Bt broadband , which I pay nearly £30 /month has been running at less than dial up speed for weeks. After ages on the phone you eventually get through to some very polite people from their Indian call centre. They test the line and it is always "Good", BUT IT QUITE CLEARLY ISN'T !! my last download test was 46.9kbps. Now I want my MAC code, cos if I'm going to have such a cr*p line, I might as well join Sky and pay far less per month. But I can never speak to the right dept. to get a MAC number
BTW I've changed my router, switched off the firewall and AV and it's not any of those three at fault.
Does anybody know of a direct dial number so you don't have to go through their call centre.

have you tried the basic stuff like hooking it up to your master line in? to cross out the possibility of crappy internal wiring?

Defiantly try this, I was in the same boat as you getting the same speeds as well, our master socket hadnt been updated in 30 years and BT said they would convert it for free, They come out and checked the internal wiring and it crumbled in his hand.

He switched the box over on the master socket and I now get 5-6mb down and 380k up, hpw old is your house? It never crossed my mind at the time that the wiring was older than me, lol.

ok you might just be right there, our master socket is a hell of a mess. Who do you contact for that , BT faults ??

Just done another test this morning and getting 782 kB/s down and 46.6 kB/s Up. How does this sound for an ADSL line ??

Can somebody just clarify for a Newbie, when people say they are getting 5mb. What do they mean , 5 mb up or down and 5 mb per what ??

when they say 5mb, in ideal terms it should be 5mb up/down, but since your paying for the cheapest broadband ie not a dedicated line your probably sharing it with 50 of your neighbors, so they limit uploads to about 1/10th of the speed. maybe 1/2 if your on slower speeds. ie 512k down would have about 256k up. i have 4mb down and 0.4mb up.

It's not really got anything to do with sharing. You could have completely uncontended ADSL (1:1), and you'd still only get 8Mb down 1Mb up on an ideal line. That's the standard - hence the A for Asymmetric.

well then pricewise it is. for a 1:1 line of t1, ie 1.5mb -2mb its about £100 - £250 a month. thats full up/down. seems broadband companies dont want us to upload much.

That IS to do with sharing - a 1:1 line is expected to be used at full rate 24/7 without issue. Bandwidth costs from BT are somewhere in the region of £1/Gb. Even a 2Mb line at those prices would cost around £600/month at that price.

ISPs don't really care how much you upload - the reason for slower upload rates on ADSL and cable is that most people want to download fast, they have absolutely no interest or need in uploading data quickly.
