Whats more, they spied on other EU governments and even on their own government for the US.

I mean this is Warsaw/USSR level of over reach.

Remember not long ago we were appalled that we found out that Stasi kept records on people in Germany/Berlin? It seemed so appalling and impossible to understand for our liberal western mind.

Yet then NSA leaks came out doing just that - we cared very little. Now we have a case where the US pretty much runs intelligence of certain EU members. If they do that, what else do they run?

Everyone spies on everyone both foreign and domestic. To think otherwise is incredibly naive.

oh and put that 3rd biscuit down, you've had 2 already....

These people are on another level, above the laws almost. It's really a case of we are the pawns and they are pulling the strings.

I just find it funny how we went from 'Look at USSR/East Germany, how did they live being watched daily by the KGB - OH THE HORROR' to now just saying 'and? Yeah I know, its fine, everyone watches us'. I still see old documentaries about cold war period where people talk about KGB watching your every move and how awful it felt for people. How happy they are that this is no longer the case.

At this rate one day we will be OK with a Gulag and sending out ethnic minorities out of their land.

You're being overly dramatic. Nobody is saying this is OK. What we're saying is that this goes on within any nation capable of doing so for the benefit of their own country. Germany will be involved in spying on other nations including it's allies.

not to my liberal western mind. i'd fully expect any leader of a major global power is being spied on at any given moment by at least one secret service or other.

absolutely, i'd fully expect us to be spying on the germans too, and the germans to be returning the favour to both us and the americans, and the whole thing to be a web of spying and counterspying across the entire world.

tbh if i were the leader of a nation i'd find it insulting to not be spied on because it means my government isn't important.

spying on important figures is different to spying on regular people though, which is where we tend to find exception to the kgb/stasi/secret police forces of this world.

It's the best way to earn money in civilisation VI, siphon funds.

To be fair Merkel is from the East and is probably worth a watch in case she opens borders to all comers or installs a Russian gas pipeline.

Yup, this. I bet even the UK and US are spying on each other.

Not just on politicians either I bet, if for example US authorities can't legally obtain a warrant to spy on US citizens they can just ask an ally to do it for them. What rights? aren't loopholes brilliant?
