Hi there people,

I'm building a Hi-Fi system/Repairing one and need some advice.

So, I have Dantax Octava 40 speakers and 3 of the subs have burnt out. Now only 1 sub, midranges, and tweaters work.

The setup consist of a crossover for each floor stand speaker with 3 channels 1 for subs, 1 for midrange and 1 for tweeters with 285W RMS.

Now the problem is which is the best of these:

  1. Get new 4x8" subwoofers and fix them to the setup?

    Or buy this:
  2. http://www.autolabmalta.com/productfile.asp?MODEL1=USB 4000&PRODUCTCAT1=Home HiFi Speakers

I especially need them for music and such and maybe some movies but mainly music.

Also as I'm a noob in this stuff and new xD, which amplifier do you recommend and what is the least price possible to buy 1? Are the ebay ones any good those from Hong Kong?

Thanks a lot in advance to you fellows who could help me!

To be honest for that price i cant see them being any good, either that or there real hidden Gems, if you have 180 euros to spend on speakers and this is a hi-fi? setup bye a new pair of speakers instead of investing in new drivers.
youll get a cracking pair of bookshelfs for £150 second hand that will absoloutly blow any of these out of the water, even new for £150 they will be far superior, if its an av 5.1 set-up then thats a differant story all together

Oh, do you think it's a bad idea investing in new drivers? Does it effect sound quality or so? Bookshelf speakers aren't as powerfull as floorstand speaker though no?

Thanks,
Necron

It's really rather difficult finding drivers that work and sound the same as the originals if they're not actually exactly the same.

You can buy a pair of drivers that are the same impedance, wattage etc, but they can sound totally different, likely pretty terrible. If you aren't prepared to read up on loudspeaker design, and can't find the same drivers or known equivalents, just buy some new speakers.

Personally I'd avoid the set you posted. I went through a phase of bigger MUST equal better, but it usually doesn't, especially when it's cheap.

For £150, you could get some very nice speakers indeed.

I take it you're in Malta. Have you tried eBay?

Decent pair of bookshelfs can be very powerful, invest in a decent pair of second hand bookshelfs and for £150 youll be getting some very nice kit, reproduction will be far superior to anything you have listed, shear volume can be obtained realy only if you have a decent amp, surprising how a large pair of speakers can sound terrible with a weak source driving them.

Well the problem is that the tweeter and midrange are 6 ohm and was looking for 4 ohm speakers. Does that make a difference? Also have found the same frequency range subwoofers.
The tweeter goes from 10,000-20,000Hz
Midrange goes from 3,500-10,000Hz
Subwoofer approx 54-4000Hz, does the 50hz make that much difference?

These are the subs I found:

Thanks for the help. Also was looking at the idea of having a car amplifier connected to my Hiper 880W Power Supply.
Looking at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3tlFxO1stU

Is it safe to connect to your computer with my specs and the amplifier together? Else buy a power supply which supplies the correct Amps to the Amplifier?

From what your suggesting it seems as though music reproduction isnt high on your list, dont rig an amp up to the psu running your pc. a large Car amp and the rig in your signiture will place a lot of stress on your Psu and i wouldnt risk my rig for the sake of boom boom boom.

If your not bothered about sound quality replace the drivers int he speakers, its not going to really stand out to you as your chasing volume, if you do insist on running a car amp in the house, though i dont know why, do it off of a dedicated psu.

I wouldnt really recommend any of the above but it seems as though your after a loud house party so your gonna opt for this sort of path.

What do you mean music reproduction isn't high? Well actually I just need it for my room to listen to music or even make some "new music" with Fruity Loops and stuff. Typically I need this setup to be good for music. I only have a Creative P5800 so this is gonna be much louder and clearer considering the power and frequencies.

The main thing that I want to connect a car Amplifier to the PSU is that I'm on a budget, therefore I found cheaper 2nd hand amps and also could be used in my car if I want it to.

I appreciate a lot your help, made me more knowledgeable on music stuff like this.

Thanks!

Ok there are people on here that know a lot more than me but ill try and explain what i mean, someone jump in and correct me f im wrong here; By reproduction i mean the quality of the audio being outputted by the speakers, how close the output is to the original recording, the closer the reproduction the better, this isnt high on proritys if its only banging club tunes you listen to but if you have a broad spectrum of musical intrest then you want a high quality set of speaker to be able to reproduce the music as it was intended to be heard.

This being said, analogue audio can also be let down by the source, ie the amplifier or audio track be it low quality mp3 or lossles flac, the system is only as good as its weakest link, a £1000 pair of speakers will not sound like a £1000 pair of speaker playing a crappy mp3 track form the headphone jack of an ipod.

Now back to your floor standers, i might be wrong but the way i understood it a speakers crossover is designed for its specific drivers, change the drivers and you change the whole sound of the speaker, not usually for the best either.

I can understand you being weary of bookshelfs not being powerfull enough but i think you really nead to get a demo of a decent pair, overall volume is impressive on my eltax monitor 3's, way more than ample for a large room, enough to cause a nu-sense and these were cheap, £60 new and they cost me £15 form ebay. invest a fair bit more and the results will speak for them selfs, if your going to spend a lot of time listning to these, producing music of your own on them and really enjoying them then invest the money in some new speakers, its really going to be the best thing you can do.

i must ask as i have just realised it hasnt been mention i dont think, what are you using to drive these when you get things sorted?

I understand you well enough what your point is. Well, actually don't have an amplifier just now, but am planning to use a car amplifier 200RMS per channel hooked to a power supply (cheap price abt 60-70eur 2nd hands) @ 4ohm or get a 2nd hand home amplifier, but is hard to find @ 4ohms here, almost all are 8ohms and correct me if I'm wrong giving the speakers more ohmage(power) will damage them.

I know it sounds dangerous connecting a car amp to a PSU (which has to supply the correct Amps in the 12V rail) but it is as well cheap. Considering my budget it's good.

Also another concern is that I can't just throw away these cabinets (way back then cost was about 700-800eur), so I'm just trying to give some more life to these cabinets.

I haven't found good 2nd hand amplifiers to ship to Malta, all have bidding and such and all are just 2nd hand expensive.
