I keep buying keyboards in the hope that I'll find a modern one as good as the old IBM Model M. I've had over a dozen different keyboards over the years, the last, a Unicom, was an updated Model M, with windows keys, USB connector and stylish black finish. My latest is the Das Keyboard Model S Professional UK. This is the one with lettering on the key caps. It has just been re-released following an earlier recall for problems with some keys not registering.

First impressions: It is heavy and seems very solid. Its a little smaller and cramped than I expected, it has a piano black surround which attracts dust and fingerpints. The keys are matt black. In the box are: A cleaning cloth for the shiny surround, some sweets, a magnet and some Fail stickers. I think the company are a little mad.

The important bit: The keys are German made, by Cherry and are individually sprung. They are not however, the same, or as good, as the IBM 'Buckling Spring' keys. They have a softer feel and if you catch an ajacent key whilst typing it will register. The board feels more cramped, a little like the G15. A welcome feature is the F keys double up as media keys, and a Fn key replaces the left hand Windows key. There are two USB ports on the left side.

Something to consider for anyone considering this board for use in a crowded office is the noise, it sounds like an old typewriter. Listen here:

Another thing is the cost. 133 Euro. I was hoping to say 'Das ist Klicken Klackentastik' but for the moment all I can say is 'Das ist Alles Clar.' I'll keep it for a while, but the search goes on.
