Dash Update Details Confirmed...

Dont know about that but I dont think something is far off, it can't be. Have a look yourself 2 weeks before a game is released on a site that collects gamertag scores. There is a nice little data base of everyone playing weeks before release in the uk. Literally giving themselves upto MS. A list of about 200 constant culprits. Always makes me laugh that about 25 of them are posters on here :D The achievement system is a master stroke for MS to gather all this info on gamers without them batting an eyelid.

I read on another gaming forum that a warning was placed on Major Nelson or a hint was given that they are planning something for the people who have used game saves to unlock full achievements in seconds.

I await the fireworks when (if they ever do) block the hackers via a dashboard update. I am still convinced they built a system where they did not even consider that someone would just flash the DVD drive and circumvent the millions they spent on R&D for their uncrackable security.

I think their consoles should be blocked from Live and their Gamertags reset to 0. (I'm sure most people just hacked to get high gamerscores anyway).

whats the socket at the bottom for then?

the socket on the bottom of the attachment that is photograpphed has a port for a 2.5mm jack only. The free headset you get has a custom connector that is bigger than the port on the keyboard attachment (look at your headset and you will see what he means).

If they give you a free headset with the keyboard that does fit in that port, then that resolves the issue.

Put it this way I'd love to do the anti piracy for them in this country. It would be the easiest job in the world. Go on forums where people are discussing it with their gamertags for all to see. Go on a website like one of the stat gamertag ones see whose playing what early. All the data collection has been done for you.

Pick 20 of the top 200 at random and threaten to take them to court where they will be asked to prove purchase of the game or where they got it from.

It would be game over with next to no legwork. I could do that job for them.

I dont think they will ever do it by dash update, just some high profile court cases. As I say they have everything they need from my GT if they ever wanted to chase me up.

you cant use a mic when using the keyboard, not well designed in my opinion

How about a wireless headset then??, im sure that will work with it...so it really isnt poorly designed now is it??.

In a lot of ways the achievement system is good as it has encouraged some people to buy more games for their score. But, conversely, others have decided to use a flaw in the system to pirate games and get their scores up.

Ironically its these people who feel "the need" to brag on forums display their gamertags or say things like "nudge, nudge, wink, wink look what game is in my recently played list" who are the easiest to track.

I think the court case would not work, as so many people rent games these days (Granted you couldn't pull that excuse with pre-released games). it doesn;t seem fair to pick on justa few.

They have to do it technically so there is no doubt as to who the culprits are and who are not. if they can't detect it from Live (which I genuinely think they can't) then they should just let it go and accept they messed up. By all accounts the new machines have newer DVD drives which I assume cannot be cracked (certainly I would be surprised if the Elite model would be crackable).

They could just accept that they messed up on say 9 million consoles and then just correct it for all future hardware releases. Depends how many they go on to sell (now there is competition) as to whetehr this is a valid strategy or not.

Just because people are playing early does not mean they are pirates tho, a few of my mates get games early due to their work, connections, promo copies are delivered long before retail.

The problem is, on internet forums, every man and his dog seems to know someone in the games industry who gets games early. They just happen to receive the games on the same days they appear on download sites.

I think on this forum a while back they started a rule that stated that if you had a preview copy you posted a photograph of it. All of a sudden all those people with legitimate press copies went quiet. I don't know why that is.

I know there are some genuine people who receive press copies of 360 games, but the vast majority who play games early are Pirates, pure and simple.

Ask dannyjo22, he has a list of all of their gamertags :D

You do realise this is a discussion forum? Why not post your thoughts here, for people to discuss rather than spamming to get traffic to your blog?

On topic, looks like a few things worth having, anyone know if MS are planning to "fix" peoples 360s who have flashed the DVD firmware?

Yeah I did post my thoughts

I really like the look of this new update, though I dont see myself buying the keyboard anytime soon,

Those were my thoughts, they do exist but I didnt think a little shameless promotion would offend anyone, didnt mean to offend you by it.

But read more clearly before you post

hahaha no I just look at that gamertag site mygamercard.net or something like that. It lists the highest achievement scores in each country and each game. Look at it next time a pre-release hits the download sites. A whole list of people basically handing themselves over. Kinda like videoing yourself speeding.

Let me say it doesnt bother me at all people doing it, I just am curious as to how MS are working behind the scenes to mop it up. I remember reading a while back that Sony only had one anti piracy guy in the whole of the uk during the PS1 boom of chipping. Yet with the achievement system MS have provided the ultimate data collection service. The sort of data correlation that would normally have the human rights infringement people whining.

It would also provide the perfect way of prosecution.

not really, unless the game hasn't been released ANYWHERE (rare) then who's to say they have not got a import machine

Good point. But they still know the day the download hits the torrents as well as we all do. As I said they only need to call 20 of the 200 out and people would have to think longer and harder about what they where doing. If they have registered the console they would know by the serial number where the system was purchased or where it should be?

Even that xbox achievements.org site has loads of people bragging about their early games while having their gamertag there for all to see. For me that plain dumb.

See if people where smart they would have an offline GT to play the early releases, but the gamerscore keeps them connecting up and signing in the dodgy profile. That achievement score has made them play on the same profile. Maybe thats luck on MS's part if they did decide to use the GT as a method of finding the pirates. Maybe thats half the genius of the gamerscore system. I suppose while the numbers stay low they don't care, as that list of early players grows they may act.

As I say its so easy to spot I'm amazed they havent yet.

they would need physical proof to prosecute, they couldn't do it from gamertags alone.

I think its also fairly certain that they cannot check the DVD firmware remotely, still cant quite believe they left that part out of the protection system.

If they could block hacked consoles they would have done it long before now..

Ummm no ones forcing you to buy the keyboard tho;)...i was just replying to your earlier post about it being poorly designed...when in actuality it really isnt is it now??.

Makes no difference to me as i got the wireless headset a few months ago when it first released...paid only £20 for it so that was a result:p.

The fact is, anyone who says "just use a usb keyboard" or "i'd rather use my usb keyboard" etc, won't be buying this keyboard, since they're so happy using their USB keyboard.

So it's hardly any loss to Microsoft.

i would prefer to use this smaller keyboard since i wouldnt need to unplug it from my pc and back again everytime i want to use either but the added expense of a wireless headset on top is just far too much too just use the keyboard
