For anyone interested, just thought I would tell you about my mates new dashboard cam. I was quite impressed with the quality, would be great for track days.

Youtube has compressed it a fair bit, more detail in the original 1080p.

This is the 720p link, make sure you click 1080p

original file if anyone interested.

He also has a Civic Type R and it copes very well with being a bumpy car. Paid £140 for it from ebay.

Another sample, different model, same camera.

It will need to be hard mounted as you can't use suction mounts on a track. I'm personally thinking of getting another GoPro (mk2) to go with my mk1.

does seem like the winning solution, GP2 on the front and GP1 on the rear view

It was just a jo...I was just tr.....nevermind :)

The video quality is excellent. How is it mounted? Just fixed to the dashboard right by the windscreen?

The music wasn't up loud at all, just normal listening level. The mic is quite good.

It came with a sucker mount and a normal adhesive one. The camera unclips and slides off the bracket.

Quality seems good an no judder either, but I suppose that is down to the mount. No external mic though?

Bah, bought my second GoPro this morning, along with a skeleton housing and a 32GB Sandisk card. Now just need an external mic to run from my exhaust to inside the car. at myself. lol.

It's one thing to have a camera pointing onto the road, but to record sound in the car? That's a bit much. Gets creepy with passengers as you need to inform and obtain permission to retain it.

No you don't. Unless you have a taxi or someother use where members of the public access your vehicle. And then you only need a cctv sticker.

I use a roadhawk in my work vehicle as i get an insurance discount and peace of mind.

Yes you do. If you have or witness an accident and want to use footage of the road with internal recording of passengers you need permission. Similarly recording without notifying the other party is not prohibited only provided that the recording is for their your own use. The moment you want to use it, in court or in media, you need a consent of party recorded and a proof you notified your passenger prior to the recording.
Recording audio inside the car is a) pointless (in case of camera filming front of the car, what could be gained by having audio recording inside?) b) complicates use of it as it can incriminate you (eg. you were talking thus not paying attention), might be blocked by data protection (eg. you were answering call with a client content of which is privileged) and get thrown out of court on basic technicalities described above c) just plain "Person of Interest" style creepy

I use camera filming front of the car as well, not heard of any insurance discounts, but surely it would be perfectly fine to obtain discount just to have a video, without audio?

Do these double as parking cameras so they will record when movement is detected?

Not unless you set up a motion detector on a relay and link battery live to its power source. But it could be done; how easily depends on your car.
