Could anybody tell me how data compressions works in networking? I have looked all over the Internet but its all to complex for me to understand. The actual questions to explain how data transmission is achieved over a communication protocol.

I was going to give an answer, but the forum collapsed in a heap (as did several other servers).
Anyway, I guess it all comes down to protocols that support encryption natively (SSH and the various flavours of VPN for starters).
Then there's all the signal trickery they used to do with analogue modems, but I guess that's too 'old hat' these days.
