Data-only SIM in a phone?

Does anyone know for sure whether the data-only SIMs, ostensibly designed for tablets and the like, will work in a phone?

In other words, if you just wanted to use a phone for data, with no calls or texts required, could you make use of such a SIM or would it simply not work?

It makes me think why not just get a similar sized / performance tablet for half the price?

It would likely work though, with no SIM the phone still boots and allows wireless etc.

100% deffo works, calls are usually disabled at the network end anyway so most attempts fail.
