My company has just changed mobile phone suppliers. As part of the transition we are all getting new SIM cards. They are being sent by the mobile phone supplier directly to our homes (addresses provided by my company).

Is this by any chance a contravention of the data protection act?

Read the small print, it's likely that there's something covering it in there. Most companies know the DPA inside out.

There is no small print in this document. only a "If you have a problem with this, Email xyz"

I'm not looking to sue or anything, but it will be added to my list of gripes.

Edit: I'm assuming there isn't anything in my terms of employment which state "The Employer of Krono reserves the right to prostitute his personal details in the way they prostitute his mind and body"

Good god I'd get sacked if I ever revealed on line where I work

I'd imagine you need to be looking at the original contracts you signed to see if anything was said about what can be done with any data that they hold about you, what they intend using it for etc.

surely it depends whether they're just using it as a delivery address (in which case i dont really see a problem, obviously your work should have your correct home address, how is it different from them receiving it and forwarding it to you) or whether the company who have been given your address for delivery are going to send you anything else, in which case i think your company would probably be in the ****

I'm assured that the 3rd party are only using this address as a delivery service. However I see no reason why the SIM card can not be delivered to my work address. And I am fairly sure that my company should not be disclosing my address regardless.

As I said I don't aim to get anything from this. Just want to add it to my gripes list.

IIRC in the DPA names and addresses in the workplace should only be kept for employment purposes and not handed out without written agreement beforehand, it would be pretty sneaky of them to obtain names and addresses without prior knowledge, leaving you open to possible junk mail / random stuff (As they have done to me)

As far as I am aware details can only be based to a 3rd party if they are to be used for the purpose they were intended.. for example if they change the way they pay you and outsorce the payments to a 3rd party payroll beauro then they can pass relavent information for use as it was intented.

Apart from a few other circumstances (such as a government body requests information on you in regards to an investigation... i.e. benefit fraud etc...) they can not pass on your details to a 3rd party without your express consent

does your work have anything else to do with your home? do you get anything sent home normally, or do a lot of your colleagues, our surveying staff have everything sent to their addresses because they rarely come into the office, as they are the minority anything en masse would come to the office, but maybe things are different for you, depends on the type of company

I'd be bloody annoyed if my employer did that. It's work related, so it should come to the office. If you start getting junk mail just forward it to your employer :P
