data recovery from virus?

my dads netbook has been affected by some kind of virus whereby all data apart from the OS and drivers has been deleted.

is there any free software out there which will allow me to recover the data?

Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Make sure view hidden files and folders is ticked as it's likely the virus has just hidden them all rather than deleted.
