Hi all,

I have a laptop that won't even power up any more - it looks like the motherboard has died. I have taken out the hard drive and plugged it into another machine and recovered some essential files - the boot-up was not normal but that was to be expected I guess. However I did get the files I needed.

Anyway I then went away for a week due to work, and while I was away the missus decided to take the drive to the local computer rep[air shop to see if they could help. They couldn't.

My problem is that now I'm back, I can't boot off the drive any more! I'm guessing that something they did has messed up the hard drive and the PC reports "A disk read error has occurred - pres CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart". I'm really annoyed that I didn't get everything else off at the same time!

OK, so I've tried booting from another disk and then accessing the laptop drive as a secondary drive.... it says "Access Denied", even though I can see the folder structure. I think maybe the reason I can't get the data is cos I haven't booted and logged in from that particular installation, and the files I need to access belong to a user on that installation. Sorry - does that make sense? Oh, and the filesystem is NTFS.

Anyway, can anyone help? I have tried connecting it to a Linux machine and booting, and while Linux sees the drive I can't enable access for some reason.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Irf.

try this:

mount disk as secondary drive
r.click the drive letter - properties
security tab
advanced button
add "everyone" as "full control"
tick "reset perms on all child objects"
OK, OK etc
