file scavenger 3.0. Once I tried that I haven't used anything else.
Though I must say I've never dealt with a hdd with no fat, only bad sectors.

file scavenger 3 is awesome, works on broken raids even
spent many hours trying to ressurect, fix and recover data from my friend's HDD, which failed in a really big way, spinright was finding thousands of errors and spent around 40 or so hours trying to repair it with no success.
after installing this proggy about an hour ago and attaching the damaged hdd via external usb, i can see the entire hdd contents in tree view, and am transfrerring the data to my PC as i type.
other apps ive tried so far for fixing / recovery:
spinright
easy recovery pro
Directory Snoop
nortons disk doctor
avast scandisk
win scandisk
o&o unerase
r-studio
cia unerase
get databack (almost worked, just could not finish scanning the whole disk)
and 1/2 a dozen others i cant be bothered mentioning
the main problem for the apps is that the ntfs file structure was corrupt, so they didnt know what filesystem the hdd had, windows was extremely unhappy with the hdd attached to.
ah i have a new fav app now anyway
