I've got a mates HDD. He can't boot into Windows XP, through any mode, i.e. Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last known good config, etc. He gets a BSOD at the loading screen.

He wants his data recovered thats the main thing, so a local said they'll recover the data for £10 - £15.

Question)
Can I recover the data myself using some kind of software?
Remember, the HDD doesn't boot into Windows at all. It keeps getting a BSOD.

Thanks :)

Try plugging it into your computer as a slave to your main HD then boot into YOUR windows. You should be able to access it, just sounds like a corrupt Windows folder.

I agree, thats the easiest thing to do.

Nah. Tried it. The whole drive is corrupt. It doesn't let me access the drive, saying so.
I'm trying the above said software.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

yeah if it cant be accessed then try Recover My files, that program seems to do the trick nicely....

If you got the means even a USB enclosure may come handy but it will be far easier as a slave and faster.

£10-15 from the locals for a recovery? Are u sure u didnt miss the 0 @ the end of that, cos £10-15 doesnt even cover the cost to walk thru the front door now adays...
