Hi all,

Basically my GF's Acer Aspire One has completely stopped working. It will load Windows and it will keep coming up with chkdsk and then it will BSOD with a "CONFIG LIST FAILED" description and it will reboot the laptop and do it all again.

All my GF wants to do is try and get her documents off her laptop, as the laptop has no CD drive at all, the only way I can copy the data is through a USB disk.

As I cannot even get into Windows, is their a way to copy the data onto the USB disk via data recovery software that can boot of a bootable USB drive?

The software has to be free is possible.

Many Thanks,

Liam

Get yourself a external hard drive caddy
Take drive out of system and put it in caddy
Connect the caddy to a working windows machine
IF you can just copy off what you need then great
if the drive has errors you might have to do a disk check before you can copy stuff out

If you cannot then it is time for some recovey software , but try and copy the stuff first
before going down that road

good luck dude

i forgot to mention, the hard drive on the aspire one is a non removable flash drive built onto the motherboard as it is a very early aspire one, sorry dude!

Am i right thinking that creating a ubuntu live cd/usb stick will work by copying the files from the hard drive onto my external hard drive?

There are better options.

A 700MB download just for data recovery seems a little pointless. The link i gave is basically a minimal Linux live enviroment with a GUI. I'm sure there are several others like it.
