data transfer issue with windows 8.1

hi, does anyone know a solution to this?
I have 2 computers, a laptop and desktop running windows 8.1 and im wanting to move some data between the 2 using a hard drive.

my sequence of events are
1. take HDD out of laptop (its has 2 HDDs)
2. connect HDD to desktop Via a HDD dock
3. Transfer data to HDD from desktop
4. remove HDD from Dock and replace In laptop
5 turn on laptop and find that I can not see the transfered Data
6 return HDD to desktop HDD Dock
7 Find all data is there

My question is why can i see the data on the desktop, but not the laptop, because if i did this on Windows 7 or earlier, it would have worked

Where are the files?

If they're in My Documents or something, then they could be on another user account possibly.

Check C:\Users\

Why not use network shares to transfer the data?

I put the files into D:\, the HDD had no OS on it and i have show hidden files as default. I did resort to network transfer in the end, but i chose to remove the HDD as it would have taken less time for me to remove the HDD, transfer the data and replace the HDD, than it would have taken for me to transfer over network.
