I fitted my own Datatag yesterday (video coming for anyone that wants it) and have a question about it.

When I painted over the stencil it left quite a visible mark. I know in the instructions it says wait 2 weeks and it will fade, but today I wiped a couple of them over.

I don't have a UV light to test it now. Have I basically totally removed the point of it? (I only did these two places) On the orange part, I can still make out there is something there, so I would guess that's fine. On the white part, I can't see anything, but lighter colours don't show it as well anyway.

Also, I assume I'm okay with people reading my Datatag number? (After all, anyone could walk up to my bike and read it) They can't do anything weird like get the registration moved over to them or something?

I've never, not once heard of a bike being recovered by Datatag. When I rode mopeds in Holland Datatag has a massive push and everyone bought it. In the 6 years or so I rode there I came across a good 30 or so roadblocks and not once did I see a scanner.

Tbh I wouldn't expect them to be scanning people riding them. I always thought it was more about finding abandoned or a load in a lock up or something.

I think insurance can be lowered (I've not actually checked mine) due to Datatag. They wouldn't do that if it didn't have some success?

That's definitely not how they sold them in Holland. They told us that at least 70% (random number, thereabouts) of police cars would have a scanner which could identify a stolen bike in seconds, and that the cops would scan everything everywhere. Give or take. That said, if it helps deter even one thief over the life of the bike then I spose it's money well spent, and if the insurance companies lower your premiums for it, then all the better.

My SV is datatagged, I can't see any dots anywhere, they are inside the fairing and the frame I think. If you shine a torch you can see little grains of sand looking things, that is the tag I would suspect.

I thought KTM Datatagged all new bikes?

To be fair though, I like the idea of doing it myself. Probably spend more time and effort ensuring a proper job than a dealer/KTM. And you know of the locations intimately if you do need to start letting the Police know.

I imagine you want UV staining on every removable panel - Perhaps remove and place on the back side? Some on the frame. I imagine engine parts will get hot and eventually just burn off any marking.

Personally I thought the UV staining was probably the weakest of the elements. Love the rice sized transponders and the DNA dotted all over the bike is pretty much impossible to remove I would think.

Still enjoying the SDR?

I'm eagerly waiting a new '17 SDR Demo ride in the next week or so (as soon as the bike is ready) then will make a decision on chopping in the R!
