This is called the 'travel and VISA scam'. They try and gain your trust, invent an illness or child's illness in order to get you to send money across by Western Union. Someone tried this on me in 2005 and I posted a similar thread on GD. I got suspicious on 'her' 3rd email though.

Can't believe they're still doing this 12 years later.

Russian Detective is a good site if you want to find out more about this type of scam.
