Dawn of Magic demo crashing

Hi,

I got the Dawn of Magic demo 2 nights ago & love it so far.

The only problem is: it crashes a lot of the time during loading.

I gives no error (not even in the event log) it just makes my screen go to standby for a while (sometimes it comes back and I can exit the game through the task manager, but sometimes I have to turn the PC off by the button).

When the crash happens all the sounds carry on playing - I had some music playing when it last crashed & that kept playing perfectly.

Anyway, the only type of error I have got out of the game is this.:

Application aborted!

RenderInit(): Failed to set default video mode (1024x768, format=22, windowed=0).

The above error was given when the game refused to start, I had to remove the settings .ini file to get it running again.

The above error's not much use as I have tried different resolutions and settings, they all crash :(

I decided to try go in game for a bit a few minutes ago, half way through loading the screen went to 'standby', I was then given my screen back for a few seconds so I CTRL+ALT+DELETEd & was presented with this:

My music was still playing at this point, so it was a pure graphics crash.

As you can see, my mouse was still there. I turned the PC off so I'm not sure if it had completely frozen at that point or not.

This doesn't happen in any other game (at least not yet...).

Any ideas of a possible solution to this please? I'd really like to play Dawn of Magic properly! :)

[EDIT]

Oh, my specs:

Code:
P4 3.0GHZ 530 1MB L2
Leadtek NVIDIA 7600GT 256MB
1GB Corsair XMS3200 Pro DDR (2x512)
Asus P5P800-SE

Thanks,
Craig.

re-install Directx9 and maybe new gfx drivers, also check your cards temp as see if its overheating

Heats are perfect, ~55c when I've been in game for a while.

Tried new graphic drivers last night, they didn't help :(

I'll try reinstall DX9 in a bit.

I managed to get another error that it produced when the game crashed, I'll post it when I'm on my main PC again.

OK, here's the error I managed to get when the game last crashed:

.\BMRender\rmode.cpp(3583): DirectX call failed: D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE (This device does not support the queried technique).

The above error really doesn't make any sense, it's saying that my graphic card/hardware can't handle what the game has been coded to do... yet I have played the game for at least 2 hours with no problems.

Got the demo myself after reading this and had the same problem. Thing is, it's not the first time. I've had it happen on Titan Quest, Lord of The Rings Online and Neverwinter Nights II.

Not a heat issue, DX / drivers all been reinstalled yet nothing will stop it. The music continues for a few seconds and then the machine reboots but the display will not return unless I cold boot it.

Just about the same with me.

Music keeps on playing until next track (in game or just my own music)

Screen goes to standby, sometimes the screen comes back after a few seconds and I can just about get out of game without having to hard reset, but I usually have to use the reset button.

I was really enjoying a game of this earlier & it randomly crashed right after I had killed a boss :(

I've asked on the DeepSilver forums, but not answer yet (it's been there for over 3 days). Forums seem pretty dead :(

Any other ideas on what I could try to fix this crashing please?

Thanks,
Craig.

I have never seen a crash screen picture quite like that one.

Could it be more to do with the demo itself rather than your graphics card?

I think it's a combination of my graphic card and the game as not everyone has the error.

The game runs perfectly when I do get it running so the D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE error really doesn't make sense.

I will try tweak a few more graphical settings, hopefully i'll find one that's causing the crashes.

Craig.
