Day Of Defeat: Source

Made a few maps for the original a long time ago back when it was just starting out... Cracking game, and the Source version is a damned good update. I miss DoD_Hill. :)

I used to play the pre-source versions competitively back in the day. Used to be an awesome scene back then. DoDS was pretty good for the first couple of years, but now its obvious Valve couldn't give a toss about it now. Also they were insistent on lowering the skill ceiling so high-skilled players couldn't really dominate the playing field. Thus taking away the point of sticking at the game for the priviledge of that feeling.

Anyhoo, some basic tips:

++ Learn to 'prime' nades. That is fire/throw them at the floor, pick 'em up and hurl them back on a shorter fuse.
++ Dont go for the highest graphical setting. Take the one thats smoothest and most consistent FPS.
++ Learn the 'quick switch' technique for the sniper. Break out scoped mode use always use the pistol key. Then you'll be best placed to make an attack at close quarters immediately if required. You also need to get into a rhythm of scoping onto frequently occupied areas and dropping the scope if no-one is there, then repeating.
++ If you want to go competitive with a clan, etc then its best to take up the light, heavy or sniper classes. No-one takes any other class seriously.

Have fun! ;-)

the game lost it for me in its clunkiness. Seriously the guns were so big on the screen. Not to mention that the recoil was just stupidly high.

I still play the original occasionally. Now THAT is fun :D

Yep i play it a lot as well and it is a shame they never released the DLC that everyone was expecting after release time - being able to play as British as per original. But its still a fun game, in fact it is the only WW2 FPS I currently have installed. Now that is saying something. :D

I also never had a problem hitting targets and if you think the thompson would be deadly accurate in real life anyway then your dreaming. I find that it also adds to war movie feel the game tries to presents. And to get me into a good mood for playing DODS I watch the videos available on steam under DODS. The little movies/battles are quite fun to watch and I wish they brought more of those videos out. ;)

Part of me thinks that TF2 which is also a great game that I play, stole DODS thunder (for want of a better word). :(

A novice can fire 6 inch groupings at 40feet with a thompson with very little practise (on the range) - in DOD:S no matter how well you try and control it you can't shoot tighter than approx 6 foot grouping at approx 40 feet - aside from the fact that it shifts the balance from skill to who happens to either have a particular sensitivity play style/hardware setup it also shows that the developers had no real experience with firearms and kinda ruins the experience for me... which is a shame as in other respects the game is very good.

EDIT: Just fired up the game to test and looks like they have tightened up some of the guns since I last played... but still massively inaccurate on the first couple of shots negating a huge amount of skill...

Dod kinda died off for me a few years back, played since beta 1.0 and the game went through some good evolution. Source came out and its sorta been at a standstill for a good while now.

I'll never figure out why they switched to the steam forums either, the standalone forums had a good community but last i looked thats more or less all gone now. :(

I used to play this religiously but stopped about a year and a half ago. May have to download it back into my steam games and give it a whirl if you chaps are all playing. :)

I personally like frag whoring when I play DoD: Source so my tip is to hang back slightly and just camp choke-points with an MG. I rack up silly scores when I do that. There will only be a few places on each map where it can be done well, try find them.

Couldn't figure that one out either. We fought tooth and nail to keep the "old" DoD forums online but the head honcho's at Valve had other ideas. This was despite PickItUp and the others on the dev team trying to put forward a good case for keeping the old boards active and not just merging completely with the Steam Forums. I really think the switch to the Steam Forums had a bearing on the demise of DoD's popularity especially as far as the community and mapping/modding scene was concerned. For a lot of people, it was the last straw and they upped sticks and moved onto something different. I really don't think Valve knew just how much of a good thing they had with the DoD forums, but meh....

I tried to stay "in the loop" as it were, on the DoD Steam forums but I lost interest. I know it sounds daft but the entire community was split apart when the change/move happened. Ah well.

For those of you who were ever on the DoD forums and allowed access to "The Bunker" section after the overhaul there or posted in RN before the overhaul, there are still a huge crowd of original members from there that still post on a kinda "Random Nonsense" forum over at TMH ( The Mess Hall.net ).

Feel free to drop by and say hi.

Now I remember why I stopped playing it...

Get in a good position behind someone... carefully line up your shots... shoot for about 2 seconds point blank... then they turn around and kill you about 3 seconds after you started firing as if you weren't even shooting at them...

I absolutely love Day of Defeat: Source but I haven't played it in a good while. I may fire it up again soon, but it really has been some of my most enjoyable online gaming.

Meh love the look and feel, gameplay dynamics, etc. but the guns are still hilariously inaccurate - turning the first few moments of a firefight where true skill will win into random luck... tho on the flip side if your truly awesome with the rifles then it does give you space to dominate...

meh even if I could get past the horrid guns... all the servers I've been on so far have been full of people using "lag toggles" and similiar crap... and just way to much general bs.
