Coverage has just started on Fox with the pre-race show. Been looking forward to this all winter :D

They're just talking about the 'cheating' that has gone on at Daytona since everyone pitched up. I say 'cheating' in inverted commas - some of it was blatant, some of it was accidental, all of it was punished. Nothing quite as blatant as days gone by - Smokey Yunick building a 7/8th scale car for example! - but NASCAR has stamped pretty hard on it. Don't expect they're too cut up about the teams hunting for an edge though - NASCAR has been all over the news in the US this week thanks to this, and as PR muppets will tell you there's no such thing as bad publicity....

This marks Juan Montoyas first (points paying) Cup race as well. He's been running pretty well this week, although mechanical and tyre issues conspired to nerf him in the 150 Duel and the Busch race (cut down a tyre in the Duel and whacked the wall, breaking a hub, then dropped a valve in the Busch race IIRC).

Line-up:

Code:
Pos	Num	Name
1	38	David Gilliland
2	88	Ricky Rudd
3	20	Tony Stewart
4	2	Kurt Busch
5	8	Dale Earnhardt Jr.
6	40	David Stremme
7	31	Jeff Burton
8	5	Kyle Busch
9	11	Denny Hamlin

15	55	Michael Waltrip
16	12	Ryan Newman
17	25	Casey Mears
18	13	Joe Nemechek
19	21	Ken Schrader
20	96	Tony Raines
21	48	Jimmie Johnson
22	109	Mike Wallace
23	160	Boris Said
24	26	Jamie McMurray
25	16	Greg Biffle

43	44	Dale Jarrett
* denotes rookie.

Darrell Waltrip just made a lovely comment regarding Toyota coming into the Cup and Busch series. People have been whinging about a foreign manufacturer being allowed into NASCAR. DW just pointed out that of the cars used to base these bodies on, the Toyota Camry is the only one made in the US :D Hopefully that'll silence some of the whittering!

So far, the truck race has been the best of the lot....much like last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. But, over 100 laps left, plenty of time for it to heat up :)

The Car of Tomorrow comes in at Bristol (round 5, half-mile short track). That'll make for a pretty interesting race, as it'll be the first time the design has been raced in anger. They've done a number of test sessions with it, but it just isn't the same as actually racing.

Aaaaaand there they go. Tony Stewart just stacked it.

***edit***

Kurt Busch went with him. Tony got down on the apron of the track, got loose, Kurt tapped him, and into the wall they go.

***edit 2***

Still working here AcidHell. Try going here and sticking in channel number 10011.

Mind, I say that....and Jimmie Johnson stacks it.

***edit***

Jimmie lost it, other guys went into him. DW reckons flat tyre, certainly looks like it.

***edit 2***

Now doesn't look like a cut tyre. Just got loose off the turn.

Ooo....that was a hard hit.

***edit***

Right, got it figured out. Reed Sorenson bumped into Carl Edwards. The field got balled up. Dave Blaney got forced down onto pit road, but had a flat tyre. When he came out, it wouldn't turn left and he skated right into the wall and Ken Schrader.

My tin is the inexperienced, uneducated Nascar tin. I think i fall into the bracket of "driving round an oval(ish) type track must be crap". Thanks to people like yourself i am being educated. Thanks. :)

No prob. I'll say this though - I never saw what could not be attractive about 43 stock cars weighing 3400lbs each with huge power being driven recklessly :D

d_m - Channel Five are showing a tape-delay version now I believe. If you have a VCR to record the end, I would do so....it was a good 'un.....

No such luck...

If you can guesstimate me a finish time for the Five version I might well still be up though...

3:10am according to the listings.

If you do miss it, NASCAR.com will probably have the video of it online soon. They've got some of the other wrecks up already.

***edit***

I keep wondering if I should do a slightly more professional thread, along the lines of the old F1 ones that Flibster used to do. Probably not worth the time though, considering how the F1 fans slightly outnumber the NASCAR ones on this forum....:D

Maybe I'll try something out for the next race. That said, it's at California....and will be a fairly dull race if the last few seasons were anything to go by.
