DC2 vs. RX8

I appreciate that, but with the rotary engine, the RX8 has an advantage on weight distribution

What is the weight distribution of an RX8 and what is the weight distribution of an M3?

I just don't see it as impossible.

No, but we've established over the last few days that you never do. I fully expect to see you claiming that its 'possible' that a Fiat Panda 1.1 Active 'could' lap the ring as quick as a Veyron at some point in the next month or so.

Even if they are both 50/50, that still leaves the lower centre of mavity obtained with the placement of the engine, as well as the fact its at least 150KG lighter.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it definitely happened, I'm just saying its not impossible :)

So you are now saying it doesn't have a weight distribution advantage?

I wish you'd make your mind up :D

E46 M3: 226bhp/tonne
RX8 231: 168bhp/tonne

It is CONSIDERABLY down on power EVEN when you look at the weight difference.

Seroiusly, they are not even on the same page. Not that they should be - the RX8 is stonking value at under £5k for a 2004. A 2004 M3 is over £15k.

Code:
Track RX-8 M3 (E46)
Top Gear Track 1:31.8 1:31.8
Tsukuba 1:09.78 1:07.11
Anglesey 55.53 52.8
Hockenheim Short 1:19.6 1:16.3
Vairano Handling Course 1:24.546 1:22.599
Oschersleben 1:56.14 1:50.00
Motovision handling course 19.84 19.79
Autozeitung test track 1:47.2 1:44.5
Rockingham 1:29.0 1:24.40
Serres Racing Circuit 1:38.5 1:35.15

Has the forum just gone insanely slow/dead for anyone else? :/

Yes the forum was v. slow for me just now.

Back on topic - I would chose the DC2. Yes it's older, but it's a damn site more reliable. There's also the rarity factor - there are tons of RX-8's cluttering up garage forecourts country wide with ridiculously low price tags. Plus VTEC + tunnel = super win. But then I owned one so I am biased I guess.

Sounds like you have made your mind up already.

Does the RX8 have flooding issues... could be a problem since its only 1/4 mile from one side to the other on the Isle Of Wight.

I'd go with the RX-8 purely for it's mechanical wizardry :) I'm both amazed and impressed by the rotary. Plus it looks nicer.

RX8. Ridiculous bargains now aslong as you look after it and buy a goodun Its looks a great car to own, for the money. I quite fancy one in the next ~18 months or so.

Then perhaps you ought to stop imagining?

The M3 is 95kg heavier than the most powerful 130i.

That surprises me. Is this based on you weighing a car and then comparing your calculation with factory figures or are you comparing like with like this time?

BMW 3-Series M3 Coupé (01-06) 1495 kg
BMW 1-Series Hatchback (04 on) 130i M Sport 5d 1375 kg
BMW 1-Series Hatchback (04 on) 130i M Sport LE 3d (07) 1400 kg
Mazda RX-8 (03 on) R3 (231ps) 4d 1429 kg

Do we know which 1 series they used, the 04 or the 07?

It is pretty clear here that the RX8 is punching well above its weight, probably down to the fact it is a genuinely sporty car.

Trouble is, these weight figures vary so greatly.

Whilst the M3 is 1495 nearly everywhere you look, but I've seen the RX8 listed as low as 1295kg, but most commonly at 1345KG.

Like with like.

Nope, but 25kg isn't much.

Really? The only thing thats clear is that the TG track times are not really very useful, given the breadth of different cars with the same time. I note you have the RX8 weight at 1429 - this makes it 159 bhp/tonne actually, which is even less than the 226 bhp/tonne from the M3. It's leagues behind.

The RX8 is actually the same power to weight as a certain we wont mention not at all sporty 3 Series ;)

The RX8 is nothing like an M3.

It costs much less, it's considerably slower, etc etc.

Yea, thats why I just took the weight from one source rather than messing about. Better to compare like with like rather than try and underhandidly argue a point by lying by omission.

Given the most commonly listed figure is 1345KG, I'd be more inclined to go by that.

In fact, if you look at Parkers, they show the RX8 at 1345 and the M3 at 1495KG.

There is a lot more to a cars lap time than its power to weight, also - so looking at the power:weight and saying its clear cut is kind of fruitless.

The fact it even comes close to an M3 means its fighting above its class imo. On paper it should be in a non sporty boring 3 series league, but its not, its up there with an M3 and a more powerful and lighter 1 series!
