DC5 to S2000?

Since about 2003/2004 I've always lusted after a S2000. I love the way they look and I love the fact that it's simply an awesome car.

Now I have been close to buying one in the past, but the practicality of having four seats and a large boot swayed me towards buying my DC5 when I sold my EP3 and last year instead of an S and when I had a weak moment in a dealership last year I again favored keeping the DC5. I've had the Teg for almost 2 years and it's the longest I've ever owned a car.

Over the past few months I keep seeing them on the road and I keep thinking to myself I should treat myself to one but again, the practicality factor keeps coming up. But then I met up with a mate today who happens to have one. He found a mint 99 car with just 23000 on the clock for £10k and he let me take it out for a spin. Granted, it has an aftermarket exhaust, some lovely bucket seats and lowering springs, but I loved every minute of it. The fact that the sun was out and the roof was down made the experience so much more enjoyable.

I've been looking on PH and I've seen some (what look like) mint examples for a lot less then what I had anticipated (This one for example) and I'm really thinking of selling the Teg and getting one. Now as for practicality, my lasses old man has a V40 estate so that's that dealt with. Just wondering if any ex or current owners can comment on what you can really fit in the boot?

Anyway, enough speel, open to your thoughts on the subject.

remember the stupid tax rule next year, mines a 99 so avoid this issue :D

the boot is big enough for anything I ever have to put in it. it actually suprised me how much bigger it is compared to some other convertibles out there.

Is yours PLG? From what model year did they change?

Superb cars and supremely reliable i am told. So good that i bought a '54 plater on a whim i was that impressed, superb stepping stone to a 911 if those are your thing too, and is the only reason i accepted a generous east cash offer from a mate for mine. They stack up even against much much more expensive machinery. After a DC5 you will love it.

Get a later model with the glass rear window, the plastic ones are a touch naff :)

I'm also looking at one of these bad boys next year, 10k seems to buy a nice example.

My only concern is some of them are pretty old now (but still look great).

What were the changes over the years?

Avoid wet roundabouts covered in diesel :D :/

Great cars apart from one thing, the steering feel is pretty poor compared to the DC2 and DC5 as well I'd expect.

Neil.

I think the steering in a DC5 is comparable to the EP3 actually ie. too light/no feel.

DC2 is very different afaik.

My Take....

I got my W plate s2k from a Honda garage in November 2007. Previous car was a Ford Puma 1.7, so quite a step up. I paid 11200 for it, and it had 54k miles, full Honda SH, and a 12 month warranty.

My roof had little tears behind the door windows at the bottom (normal for cars of this age) and a plastic rear screen. The screen failed in December, and I had a new roof fitted with a glass rear screen (heated, but not wired in yet) from CarHood Warehouse for 820 quid. This roof appears to be quieter for wind noise, but it could be placebo.

I've got the usual issue of worn bottom outside bolster padding on both the drivers and passenger sides, and plan to get this sorted shortly.

I'd try and make sure you get one thats had the clutch changed, as this is about £500, and is probably about to go if its still onthe original and been driven hard.

Some random thoughts.....

Great cars, much of the best advice has already been given.

Get at 02+ with the glass rear screen, it's a lot better than the plastic one and there are other refinements in the 02+ model too. 04+ I believe has traction control or some sort of stability control (I think).

S2000s are deadly in the wet on the standard Bridgestones, but you could probably say the same for any powerful RWD car. I used to powerslide mine around mildly damp mini-roundabouts for fun. :D

Insurance is less (the difference when I last got a quote was considerable) on the GT model (hardtop) even though it's not permanently attached to the car. The GT and non-GT cars are identical besides the hardtop so if you buy a "non-GT" with a seperate hardtop just insure it as the GT.

Gearbox has an amazing feel to it, really solid and purposeful.

Had to read that twice. £11200 for a W plate:eek:

Never knew they were holding their value so well.

The prices seen so varied on PH though.

The dark blue ones look great.

I thought the wind noise was quite bad, does the hardtop greatly reduce this? (I prefer the look of the hardtop anyway)

www.s2ki.com and read the FAQ.

Awesome cars, I still love driving mine. Steering does lack a bit feel but can be improved with geometry and braces. The problem is that you are so far from the front wheels - Ive never found it to be trouble though

OT: But have you done anything to your DC5? and have you got any pics of it? Always have a soft spot for these. There is a white one I see in 'Boro ever now and then I love it!

TIA :)

Changed a lot since then though.

Practicality wise you can't beat a convertible - remove the roof, and you've no length limit to what you load up - the sky's the limit (literally) ;)
