Hi have one nanya 512 pc2-5300 memory modue in pc. Tried to install more memory, tried what I believe to be a 1GB pc 5300 chip, would not boot up just beeped. Then got 512 pc 5300/4000 chip marked up as Kingston kvr800d2k2/1gr. googled kingston ref apprears to be pc2-6400, is this the same? No brand on the 1GB chip. Any suggestions welcomed.

Electrically there is no difference between DDR2 PC4200, 5300, 6500 etc etc, they are just the same but quality control has allowed some modules to be run at higher clock frequencys. You can use higher speed rams at slower speeds without any issues.

The 1GB stick should have worked, all I can imagine is it's faulty. However it could simply be that the 1GB stick wanted more voltage, not all ram likes to work at the default 1.8V of the DDR2 specification, I would try increasing the memory voltage to 1.9V in bios and see if that helps. 1.9V is low enough to be unlikely to damage your original memory, but could be enough to kick the additional memory to life. (PS the more sticks of ram installed the more likely to need a small voltage boost).

But to answer your question, DDR2 is all the same basically :)
