I have just ordered a Buffalo Wifi Router and will make it my first task to invalidate the warranty and install a 3rd party firmware.. :p

The question is, which is better; dd-wrt or tomato?

Are there any comparison websites? Or do they generally have the same features?

We went from DD-WRT to Tomato and there's been no noticable performance increase/decrease, but you get some fancy QOS graphs/charts and real time bandwidth monitoring with Tomato.

from everywhere i've read, anyone that goes to tomato never changes back..

i spent a few hours browsing before installing my first custom firmware (which was tomato) had no trouble at all, it's never crashed, since August

rock solid :)

static dhcp is awesome, you can do this.. "if mac address XX connects, give them ip 192.168.1.10" or whatever, makes it really easy to portforward, without having to faff on the actual computer

How does dd-wrt stack up against tomato when used just as an access point? I've got a wrt54gl running dd-wrt, with SSIDS (one with PEAP / radius authentication) and it has been known to be a bit flaky. Would tomato run any better?

I use HyperWRT+Thibor_15c - It's been stable and fast the day I got the router and bunged Thibor on there and that was over half a year ago.

Any of these popular WRT variants and Tomato will be great that's for sure and you're going to find very little between them stability and performance wise. It's all down to the GUI style you prefer and I much prefer the Linksys tabbed interface over Tomato and DDWRT which HyperWRT keeps respectively.

does tomato take up all the space on a wrt54gl, or will there be room after the firmware is installed for other linux aps.

Thank you for the feedback.. I might go for the tomato when I get the buffalo although they all look good. :)
