new rig?

hi. im thinking of biulding a new rig. these are the main components.

MSI 790GX-G65 AMD 790GX ddr3 Motherboard
AMD Phenom II Tri Core 2.8GHz
G.Skill 3GB (3x1GB) DDR3 ram
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Corsair VX 550W ATX Power Supply

will this all fit together well? i will upgrade the ram later to as high as 12 GB if i can afford it. using the same type. dose this look good? what is the weakest part? thanks

AM3 board's are mostly DDR3 were all AM2+ boards are DDR2, these cpu's can run on both board's as they have DDR2 & DDR3 memory controllers, were AM2 cpu's only have DDR2 controlers and will not fit in AM3 boards.

Hope that makes sense :)

Yes if you do buy a AM3 board, looking at some reviews it showed a small increase in performance, can't remember which review I saw it in

Personally I would say no, the speed increase of DDR3 is not worth it.

Yes, all games are compatible, of course.

The spec looks good. Go for 4 or 6GB of RAM though.

thanks. had another look around and decided to get 2 sticks of that ram because hte second is only $10. thing is i only have xp 32. but im getting windows 7 64 when it comes out and was going to upgrade then. but its cheaper this way

Why have you got 3x RAM sticks? AMD doesn't support triple channel memory yet. Wouldn't you be better getting multiples of 2 sticks to run in dual channel mode. Also, DDR3 is only slightly faster than DDR2 in AM3 rigs - have a look here. You may want to save your money and get some decent DDR2 RAM like this.

thanks a;ot. im quite new to this and presumed that ddr3 meant it ran in tripple channel. thanks. tbh the only thing im definatly settled on is the cpu. cheers

I don't want to throw a spanner in your works - but have a look at this review and compare the Phenom X3 performance with the Intel Core 2 Quad q6600 in the applications and games that make a difference to you. Here is a quick spec based on the core 2 quad q6700 (q6700 is 11% faster than the q6600 at stock settings).

i was looking at overclockin it to up to 4 ghz. and as ill be using it mostly for gaming i dont think quad would be much better would it? thanks

From what I have read, the Phenom 2 X3 will get to around 3.7-3.8GHz, while the q6700 will get 3.6-3.7GHz. Clock-for-clock they are about the same - so in non-threaded applications the X3 will be slightly faster, but anything threaded - the extra core on the q6700 will give it the win.

If you want 4Ghz you may want to try out a Core 2 Duo e8400 or an i7 920 D0 (likely out of your price range).

GTA 4,Far Cry 2, half life 2:ep 2, MS flight sim X, supreme commander and quite a few others are multithreaded from what I remember, I also expect a lot more in the future.

Applications like Win RAR, photoshop, divx, 3D studio max and many more popular apps are multithreaded - a good list is over here.
