im going to buy 4GB of ram PC2 8500 / 1066 for my brothers computer he's using a AMD Althon 64 X2 4200+ and his motherboard will take the faster DDR2 1066 over the 800MHz atm he's got 2GB of 800mhz ram in there which are two different set's.

From what i read online the chip wont run PC2 8500 1066 ram ? if i buy the 1066 ram can i clock it down to 800mhz for the time being as i plain to buy him a new cpu some time soon any way ?

Also which would be better to buy

Corsair XMS2 4GB
or
Kingston HyperX 4GB

The Corsair is £10 cheaper but has different timmings to the kingston .

Would you say it would be wise to spend £80 on ram atm should i wait for the price to go down ?

Just a point to make .. I don't recall any motherboard actually supporting PC2-8500 but that's not to say it won't run at 1066MHz hence the reason why PC2-8500 is often regarded as "overclocking" RAM. Therefore it should still run at the 1066MHz.

Revival a bit but Ive just got some of the 1066 ram, to get it to run as close to speck just up the FSB & calculate the divider to get it running as high as possible. OR leave it running at 800MHz and lower the RAM timings to 4-4-4-12 which it should do. I have hyperx & I cant decide if running it closer to 1000MHz or 80MHZ & 4-4-4-12 would give the best performance in games... think its about the same even though lower cas latency is generally better in games :s

...decisions..
