DDR vs DDR2 SODIMMs

Ooops, I may have made a schoolboy error. How different are the notches in SODIMMs (DDR vs. DDR2)? Is it quite a lot, or only a couple of mms?

I have a SODIMM which should fit but doesn't quite (physical size is good but notch is just out). Does this sound like a manufacturing defect or a user error?

well, wahts the spec of the laptop? we would be able to tell you if it takes ddr1 or ddr2..

It's a ReadyNAS Duo. It takes DDR1. The RAM is from Ebay, which I why I am unsure of the true spec. The more I read however the more I think I've bought DDR2 instead of DDR. I'm just surprised the physical differences aren't more obvious (i.e. the notch being completely different, instead of just a little bit different).
