DDR1 in DDR2 board?

yeah but if you are getting DDR2 you are just wasting upgradable resource.
yes you can get motherboards that support DDRI and DDRII however you can only run one type at a time, and usually it ends up having maximum of 2 DDRII or 2 DDR at most ( meaning you cant have 4 of one type )
 
I'm building a cheap system for someone based on socket AM2 and already have some spare PC3200 DDR RAM that I want to use with this system, but am struggling to find a new motherboard that doesn't mention DDR-II support.

Is DDR & DDR-II the same size/shape with the notches in the same place, i.e. will DDR fit in a DDR-II DIMM slot and vice versa?

correct me if i am wrong but all am2 socket boards are ddr2 memory modules only ddr1 memory modules will not fit and vice versa for ddr1 boards
 
your correct only certian intel boards can tkae both (not at the same time) becuase they dont have an in built memory controller on thier cpus amds do and becuase its not backwards compatiable they only take ddr2
