How come that DDR2 is ridiculously cheap now but DDR is still quite pricey! I suppose it means that I'm stuck with 1Gb DDR for now until I upgrade but that means I'd need a new motherboard and CPU :o

Not sure how much difference I'd really notice in going from:

Opteron 165 (stock @ moment)
DFI Ultra-D Motherboard
2x 512Mb Corsair XMS PC3200LL

to say

Intel Core2Duo 6420
Gigabyte DS3P Motherboard
2x1Gb DDR2 / 2x2Gb DDR2

Probably not justified? Thinking Quad core would be more logical so might have to hold back for now...

Depends what you're doing, 2GB will be much better if you're running vista or games.

As for the pricing of RAM, it's due to the amount being manufactured. The latest motherboards/cpu's use DDR2 so manufacturers are running full pelt to meet demand so they can drop their prices due to econimies of scale.

I do run games but mostly programming at the moment so can afford to hangfire for just now until them Quad cores drop under £200 ;)

I'll keep an eye on members market for people upgrading to DDR2 systems, think it'll be the only way :(
