DDR2 in DDR3 slots

Will DDR2 memory still work in DDR3 slots ?

Or is it better to put DDR3 in them ?

Just use regular DDR in it, it will be faster than DDR3 due to the much better timings.

Is there any realistic improvement in performance with DDR3 over DDR2 ?

I mean in terms of DVD encoding/burning and gaming ? or is it just numerical ?
