Stupid question but you can't have a 512mb dimm and a 256mb dimm running together they have to match right? So either two 512s or two 256s.

you can have what ever you want in a pc. but it wont run in dual channel mode

It will run Dual Channel on a 945/965/975 chipset board. Non-Intel chipset boards I'm not sure about, but this was one of the big improvements of Intel's implementations of DDR2 over DDR was that it pretty much would run Dual Channel with any RAM as long as the timings were capable.
