DDR3 is just a bit faster, foor instance the max DDR2 speeds you can get (This is without OCing) is 1200Mhz, whereas DDR3 goes up to 2000Mhz, unless you are going i7 there is no major benefit from going to DDR3 unless you have some crazy overclocks planned.
