ddr2 to ddr3

my board takes either ddr2 or ddr3, will I notice much performance increase from going from 4gb of ddr2 to 4gb of ddr3?

No. I already tried this back when I had a similar board, you wont be able to tell the difference.

ah well, at least I will be ready for when I buy a high end board when AM3+ comes out.

I guess it will probably improve benchmark results aswell

1/2FPS at most, in gaming at least. I recommend you sell your DDR2 for some DDR3 since the price is at a low point, it's newer tech and you'll probably make money like I did when I sold my DDR2 for it. Also, it's better for OC'ing.

I ordered the OCZ Special OPS 4GB (2x2GB) this morning, the price was just too good not to. Will probably keep hold of my ddr2 for any am2 cpus I buy to bench though.

Not really no. I mean there MAY be some small difference, but it depends on the memory itself not DDR2/3. DDR3 is generally cheaper so you may be able to afford more RAM in the future.

It's been said already, but you may be able to sell your DDR2 RAM, and buy the 3 equivalent + a little bit extra.
