DDR2 vs DDR3

I'm looking into buying a new rig and i was wondering..

Is there any realistic improvement with DDR3 instead of going with DDR2 ?
Or should i say is the extra cost worth it ?

Also is it worth going DDR3 to be fairly safe for the future or is DDR2 going to be around for some time still?

From what I have seen recently, even some of the very latest high end boards coming out are sticking with DDR2. DDR3 is just too expensive at the moment. You can get 8gb DDR2 for the price of 2gb DDR3!

I would say you should be good for a while yet.
