So please tell me - for my pc which i use for internet and games is it better to spend £100 on 4gig ddr2 or £100 on 2 gig ddr3 ????

Thats all

DDR2 + DDR3 are not the same. it all depends on which motherboard you have. If you list your pc specs i'm sure somebody will help you.

Generally speaking the performance advantage of DDR3 is pretty minimal (due to the slacker timings), at least from the last reviews I saw.

Current DDR2 prices make DDR3 look decidedly overpriced.

The slacker Timings cant be compared same as DDR to DDR2 Timings, you dont see DDR2 with 2:2:2:5/1T like the fastest Corsair DDR had.

Ive seen reviews wiith Corsair DDR3 4GB (think 1800mhz Modules) running upto 1600mhz with 4:4:4:12 (better than some 4GB DDR2 kits).

If you read that OCZ paper the other day, they claim DDR3 is XX times faster than SDRAM at same clock, so it will also be X times faster than DDR2 at same clocks.

X & XX = You need look down page for the post from 23rd cause I cant be bothered :p

Edit: I dont like lazyness so here : http://www.ocztechnology.com/drivers/DDR3_faq.pdf

hi,

thanks helmutcheese, i did actually read that before posting. To me that just seems like marketing jargon.

All i want to know is the original question is it worth me even considering ddr3 at all?

Will windows suddenly boot up faster, will a web page explode onto my screen? If the answer is no then i will buy ddr2

P.S this is just some real world research before i upgrade - oh and what motherboard do you peeps recomend and chip bearing in mind i have an 8800gt (1gig). I guuess i dont need 3 way sli !???

cheers

I dont know if its worth you getting it, only you know that answer.

All I DO now is you cant compair the Timings for both so anyone trying to is clueless.

No.

No.

No.
Do pepperoni pizzas taste better than ham and pinapple
Yes!

Internets opinions don't count as research my friend.

8800 GT is enough for most people, SLI if you have a large monitor / demanding on settings, 3 way SLI is just guff.

I'd save yourself some money hotdog and go DDR2, its cheaper and the performance gains of DDR3 on current tech aren't enough to warrant spending the extra dosh.

even thou timings are a lot slacker in time, the performace of DDR3 will out do DDR2 on it's speed, like DDR2 outperformes DDR with slacker times

correct, slower timings will add more latency but the increase in clock speed helps to negate the latency of using faster ram, and although the end result in latency will be around the same as ddr2 the final bandwidth will be far greater for the faster speed ram.
