DDR3 RAM Purchase Query

Hi all,

I purchased some RAM from OcUK a few years back. It was the Patriot Venom 2x 4GB (2400MHz) dual channel kit. Unfortunately, OcUK doesn't stock this RAM anymore.

In the future, I was hoping to purchase another dual channel kit with the same speed (2400 MHz) however, finding the same dual channel kit is virtually impossible... Would I be able to get away with a different brand or will the timings and voltage difference just not work at all in my rig? What are the implications of buying two different kits and has anyone done this before?

Thanks, feedback is appreciated.

Ideally not.

If you can't find the same memory (I'm sure you will be able to get it somewhere online?) it might be worth flogging the 8GB kit and buying a 16GB kit.

By the looks of things, it's either been sold out (literally everywhere) or nobody wants to sell it anymore xD Regardless, selling my current kit and buying another would probably be a better idea. Are there any you would recommend or is it worth waiting a bit longer for the prices to drop (that's providing they are going to drop in the future)?

RAM is sort of at an acceptable price now. Are you dead set on 2400mhz? I think it was linus that did a test between DDR3 800 (down clocked I assume), 1333, 1600 and 2400mhz and found there was no difference in gaming :O.

I've always stuck to corsair however I think I'm starting to branch away from that now.

Thinking about it, I'm not that fussed, I would probably still go for the 2400 MHz kit though.

Ah decent board so it will 8GB dimms.

What CPU cooler you running (as in does it matter about height of the dimms).

Currently, the H80i. I don't think it really matters about the height, I have plenty of space currently. There's nothing obstructing the RAM slots on the motherboard, put it that way.

Good question i been trying to find out the same thing.

You can mix and match RAM usually with no issues. The only thing to remember is that all the RAM will run at the same voltage (so get ones set to run at the same) and they will all run at the speed of the slowest RAM, so if your new RAM is 2100 and the old RAM is 2400 both will run at 2100.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Will have to check what voltage my current RAM is. Alternatively, I'll probably sell my current kit and buy another 16GB one.
