DDR3 Ram

8gb is still fine for most purposes, what's the rest of your system spec, it might not be a value for money upgrade depending on what you've got and what you need it to do..

Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM - overclocked to 3.8ghz
GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1600C9DC)
XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
AOC G2460FQ 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor

I definitely need a new GFX card first up, RAM probably needs to come after that.

Your system is very similar to mine (same mobo and cpu, and I had a 7950 until about 7 months ago), so here are my experiences:

-Having upgraded to a RX480, I have found I got CPU bottlenecks at 1080p even at a higher clockspeed than you (4.4ghz). I would bear that in mind as your system is pretty well balanced currently (what resolution is your monitor?)
-I have 12GB RAM which has proved sufficient. The only reason I have 12GB rather than 8GB is because when I upgraded years ago from 4GB, for future proofing reasons I didn't want to fill all slots and only have 8GB. Given how expensive RAM is these days I wouldn't bother, a couple of years back you could get another 16GB for like £50 but not anymore (although checking just now things aren't quite as bad as they have been). I have on occasion seen usage go over 8GB but it is pretty rare.
