Reading that i cant help but think this is going to flop like RAMBUS memory

But yeah it will probably pick up once it gets much cheaper. We havent even been on ddr2 that long... infact ive just ordered my first ddr2 set and i consider myself to be an overspend when it comes to new tech!

DDR2 was the same when it first appeared. Very loose timings and silly money.

But the next Intel chipsets will support DDR3 and it will become the norm before too long.

It has other benefits though, lower power consumption, improved pre-fetch. And no one is ever going to convince me that a PC2-6400 module with CAS5 is quicker than a PC3-12800 module with CAS7

Will DDR3 be backwards compatable and still be 240pin? Would realy like the option top upgrade at a later date so would this mean a Bios upgrage or a new board?

DDR 3 motherboard chipset should be backwards compatible with DDR 2 but current DDR 2 chipsets won't support DDR 3

Kinda like a PS2 playing PS3 games really, can't be done.

The P35 chipset (Intel) for Yorkdale etc will have mainboards with

- DDR2 only
- DDR3 only
- Both DDR2 and DDR3 slots

...but I don't believe that one slot will provide for both DDR2 and DDR3.

Yip different slots.

Some P35 boards will be DDR2 only.
Some will be DDR3 only.
And some will have two DDR2 and two DDR3 slots. I'm sure only two can be used at once.

It's quite possible that manufacturers will release the exact same board in two or three versions.

In my opinion, best time to upgrade to P35 is when a newer chipset is about to be released the CPU's will be cheap as the current conroe & in my opinion the best motherboards always come out at the last minute i.e. Abit AB9 QuadGT, DFI P965-S Dark Infinity, DFI LAN Party UT NF680I LT SLI-T2R.

Also Ram prices are cheap now for DDR2 I still believe this is because they are wanting to get rid of as much DDR2 stock in anticpation of DDR 3 plus the strong pound maybe pushing prices down.

ddr3 iv seen go up to 1800mhz, so there is potential for it. but they should have just gone to ddr4 and be done with it.
