Hi all, my old i7 920 system is still running very well overclocked to 4ghz. The old girl is still chugging along and there doesn't seem to be a lot that phases it. I use it mainly for my photo/video editing these days. Now it only has 6gb ram and I was contemplating throwing in some more as it seems to be the weakest point. I'm running a Gigabyte Ex58-UD3 board and have read conflicting stories of what can or cannot go in .. anybody got ideas as to what can actually work both in speed and size?

Any config of sticks will go in, I run a 5650 in my home server with one set of triple channel and another set of dual channel. Works a charm.

Try to buy the same brand ram.. get 3 sticks.. Then test to see what the timings are the stick with the higher timings put in slot 1 and your ok to run xmp

so I know that the i7 920 can take 24gb ram .. from what i have read it can use either 1600mhz or 200mhz at the top end. so any combination to reach the 24gb with either 1600mhz or 2000 mhz will do .. but does it have to be 2, 3, or 4 sticks ??

ok I've read so many conflicting stories about what I can and cannot do I frankly don't know what to do next. The advice I've had is NOT to just buy three sticks of identical ram but to make sure I get a triple ram kit to run the triple channel. To that end, I cannot find a kit that will give me 24gb (3x8gb sticks) and the best I can seem to find is
12GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Ripjaw Series (9-9-9-24) Triple Channel kit 3x4GB. It's double the ram I have now (Crucial ballistix 1333 1600mhz). What are the opinions on this ram? My other concern is that I have my cpu overclocked to 4ghz at the moment. What is the correct way around refitting the ram and keeping the overclock?

so the Ripjaws ddr3 triple channel kit arrived yesterday. Installed the 12gb and adjusted settings via the gigabyte 17 920 guide. Have system up and running at the full 1600mhz at the 4gb overclock without turbo enabled. Stress testing now but temps haven't gone above 67 degrees C. The extra ram sure makes a difference at boot but haven't had the chance to use it in any other way yet. With the temperatures so low at max stress, do I just enable turbo? That is supposed to give 4.2ghz .. what if i want to push it higher? where do I start ??

When I had my x5650 I just bought three individual sticks of Crucial ballistix tactical and it ran 7-7-7-20 with no issue on the P6X58D-E at 1700MHz+.

ram installed and up to spec .. overclock running at 4.2ghz (73 degrees max at 100% stress for 4 hours). Win10 pro x64 installed on new SSD .. a new lease on life for the poor old thing :-)
