I have Dominator Platinum Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 DRAM 1866MHz (CMD16GX3M4A1866C9) memory and want to know if this ram would work on Skylake i7 6700k?

Not seeing much difference between ddr3 & ddr4.

Iirc, those boards that will use ddr3 will require low voltage dimms, (1.35v). Whereas 1.65v for ddr4.

The memory controller supports ddr3l but I doubt it will be used in anything other than non mainstream configurations . Ddr4 voltage is 1.20 standard but most decent overclocked kits @ 2666 and beyond or even 2400 with super tight timings will use 1.35 , standard ddr3 is 1.5v and 1.65 for again overclocked kits . I doubt we will see anyone using lower power ddr3 except in extreme OEM cases

Hmmm, I have some Dominator Platinum DDR3 lying around from a previous build that got delayed. Apart from the reduced capacities for both, would there be any other disadvantages in going with a DDR3/DDR4 board?

One of the disavantages would be only two DDR4 and two DDR3 slots. I guess that 2x8GB would be enough for most anyway.

Edit: Also if its like the old DDR2/DDR3 motherboards you cant mix DDR4 with DDR3

So does it work or not?

First answer above looks to be correct; some boards will support DDR3. Whether those boards will accept up to 1.65v, or just the low voltage stuff, not sure.

Anyone else remember the days when memory manufacturers swore they couldn't possibly deliver performance DDR3 at low voltage - then all of a sudden they could when Intel capped it to 1.65v? :P

The board will be either DDR3 or DDR4 not both on the same board.

All premium boards are DDR4 based for sure.

But Skylake won't cope with 1.65v to the DIMMs so if they work at all at 1.35v, you will need to massively underclock it. This is why Skylake supports DDR3L not DDR3.

In short buy DDR4.
