I will be soon upgrading my system to a MSI Z170 M7 & 6700k but I am clueless as to which memory to go for, I was looking at the Corsair Dominator Platinum (3000mhz) but is kinda expensive.

My colour scheme is black/red but I refuse to go with GEIL again.

With Skylake memory performance does help in a lot of applicatuons. 3000+ is a good idea. Why not go Team 3866mhz or 3733mhz Black and Red Heat Spreader too.

i was told that a lot of Skylake set ups are towing to run with ram past 2666Mhz?

Edit: my mistake is x99 and 3000mhz+

The reviews ive read showed that going from DDR4 2133 to DDR4 3600 only had a 5% improvement if that in real world performance. Is it really worth the extra cost?

Remember to make sure the memory you choose is on the QVL for your motherboard. It ensures compatibility, as they certify that they have tested it to work out of the box etc.

For example, for my motherboard (Maximus Hero VIII), here's the latest QVL:

It's not really an issue on this platform as the guardband on most kits is sufficient for operation compared to when running on X99 systems, it's a different story when paired the other way around. Minimal tuning is normally required when using the larger majority of older DDR4 memory kits that were binned for 4 to 8 DIMM boards / HWE

Not a big problem tbh, even non oc socket boards, (like mine in sig) can handle 3000mhz ram, then you have quad channel on X99.

yes a lot of info right now is showing 2666Mhz as been the new sweet spot, like the 1600mhz of ddr3 was the go too speed for everyone.
